Quick heads-up: general information only, not career, immigration, tax, legal or financial advice. Rules, licences and hiring change, so check the official and employer sources linked below before you act.
Finance is one of Gibraltar's biggest industries, and it is wider than "banks". It includes accountants and auditors, fund administrators, insurers, compliance teams, payments firms and crypto and blockchain businesses. This guide explains the main types of role, who regulates them, the skills employers ask for, and where official pay data stands.

How big is finance in Gibraltar?
The official Employment Survey counted 2,289 employee jobs in the "Financial Intermediation" industry in October 2025, down 31 (-1.3%) from 2,320 in October 2024. Source: HM Government of Gibraltar, Employment Survey Report 2025 (October 2025 figures; checked 11 Oct 2026). The report is also listed on the Statistics downloads page.
"Financial Intermediation" is the survey's category name. It is not the same as every job you might see advertised as "finance" (for example, accountants working inside non-finance companies are counted in other industries).
Who regulates finance: the GFSC
The Gibraltar Financial Services Commission (GFSC) regulates the financial services industry in Gibraltar. Its own site says it supervises firms including auditors, banks, company managers, e-money institutions, professional trustees, payment services providers, funds and fund service providers, insurance companies, managers and intermediaries, investment firms and insolvency practitioners. Source: GFSC home page (checked 11 Oct 2026).
Its statutory objectives include promoting market confidence, reducing systemic risk, protecting consumers and reducing financial crime. Source: GFSC: What we do and why (checked 11 Oct 2026).
Why this matters for jobseekers: regulated firms must meet GFSC standards, so compliance, risk and AML skills are in demand across almost every type of finance employer. You can check whether a firm is authorised on the GFSC's Regulated Entities register (checked 11 Oct 2026).
Types of finance role in Gibraltar
Banking
Banks and private banks hire for operations, client service, lending, relationship management, finance, risk and compliance. The GFSC register lists these authorised banks (as of 11 Oct 2026): Bank J. Safra Sarasin (Gibraltar) Ltd, Gibraltar International Bank Limited, IDT Financial Services Limited, Moneycorp Bank Limited, The Royal Bank of Scotland International Limited, Trusted Novus Bank Limited, Turicum Private Bank Limited, Union Bancaire Privée (UK) Limited (Gibraltar Branch) and Xapo Bank Limited. Source: GFSC Regulated Entities: Banks. Registers change, so confirm the current list there. This is a register of authorised firms, not a list of firms that are hiring.
Funds and asset management
Funds, fund managers and fund service providers (administration, custody and similar) are regulated by the GFSC (see the GFSC home page). Typical jobs: fund accountant, fund administrator, investor services, valuation and reporting, and compliance.
Insurance
The GFSC supervises insurance companies, managers and intermediaries (GFSC home page, checked 11 Oct 2026). Typical jobs: underwriting support, claims, policy administration, finance and reporting, and compliance.
Accounting and audit
Accountants work in practice firms and in-house in finance teams. Statutory audit is regulated: the GFSC authorises statutory auditors under Part 24 of the Financial Services Act 2019, and asks applicants for details of qualifications, audit or accounting knowledge and post-qualification audit experience. Individuals may also have to sit a GFSC aptitude test on Gibraltar laws and regulations relevant to statutory audits. Source: GFSC: Applying for a permission (audit and insolvency) (checked 11 Oct 2026).
Compliance, AML and MLRO
Firms covered by Gibraltar's anti-money-laundering rules need an MLRO (Money Laundering Reporting Officer): the person who receives internal suspicious-activity reports and decides whether to report externally to the Gibraltar Financial Intelligence Unit (GFIU). In regulated entities the MLRO must be approved by the GFSC, which looks at fitness and propriety, competence, capability, skills and experience. Source: GFSC AML/CFT Guidance Notes: Glossary (checked 11 Oct 2026). For relevant financial businesses, the GFSC's prior written consent is also needed before appointing or changing an MLRO. Source: Proceeds of Crime Act 2015 (Relevant Financial Business) (Registration) Regulations 2021, reg 9A (checked 11 Oct 2026).
Most compliance roles are not the MLRO seat itself. Analysts, KYC/onboarding officers, transaction monitoring and sanctions-screening roles are the usual way in. Finance-leaning compliance jobs usually appear under Finance on Work in Gibraltar; pure legal roles sit under Legal.
Fintech, crypto and DLT
Gibraltar has a dedicated framework for Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) providers, regulated by the GFSC. The GFSC states that DLT providers must have adequate resources, effective governance, secure systems and controls to prevent, detect and disclose financial crime. Source: GFSC: Distributed Ledger Technology Providers (checked 11 Oct 2026). Typical jobs: compliance and AML, risk, finance and treasury, operations, and technology.
Payments and e-money
The GFSC supervises e-money institutions and payment services providers (GFSC home page). Typical jobs: payments operations, reconciliations, fraud and financial-crime investigations, and compliance. Many iGaming operators also run payments and risk teams. See iGaming jobs in Gibraltar.
Who hires?
Employer types, based on the GFSC's list of supervised firms above: banks, fund managers and administrators, insurers and insurance intermediaries, accountancy and audit firms, payments and e-money firms, DLT providers, and the finance, risk and compliance teams of licensed businesses in other industries.
Named firms: only the banks on the GFSC register above are named in this guide, and being listed does not mean a firm is hiring now. For funds, insurers, auditors and others, use the GFSC Regulated Entities register.
On Work in Gibraltar, job titles are public without signing in; employer names show once you sign in. Then you apply on the employer's own site. We only list direct employers.
Skills and qualifications
What the official sources say, and what they do not:
- Statutory audit: needs GFSC authorisation, with qualification and experience evidence and possibly an aptitude test (see above). Source: GFSC.
- MLRO and other regulated roles: the GFSC assesses skills, qualifications, experience, competence, capability, fitness and propriety before approving individuals for specified regulated functions. Source: GFSC AML/CFT Guidance Notes: Introduction (checked 11 Oct 2026).
- Professional bodies: ACCA and ICAEW are recognised qualifying bodies for statutory audit in the UK audit framework, per the ICAEW UK Audit Regulations and Guidance (June 2025). That is the UK framework: Gibraltar audit approval is separate and is decided by the GFSC. The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) accepts ACCA/FCCA membership toward its MCSI membership: CISI list of recognised external qualifications.
- Studying locally: the University of Gibraltar lists an ACCA computer-based exam centre (checked 11 Oct 2026).
We have not found an official Gibraltar source saying any particular certificate is required for entry-level finance roles. Each employer sets its own bar, so read the advert. Skills that employers' ads commonly ask for, such as clear written English, accuracy, Excel, and care with confidential data, vary by role: treat them as a checklist from the advert, not a rule.
What does finance pay?
Official data, not job-ad guesses. The Employment Survey Report 2025, Table 3.3 (Monthly-Paid Full-Time Adult Employee Jobs, October 2025) gives average gross monthly earnings for Financial Intermediation of:
| Group (October 2025) | Employee jobs in sample | Average gross monthly earnings |
|---|---|---|
| Adult men | 958 | £6,684.46 |
| Adult women | 1,017 | £4,039.18 |
Source: Employment Survey Report 2025, Table 3.3 (October 2025; checked 11 Oct 2026).
For context, the same report shows average gross annual earnings of £43,276.4 for full-time employees across all industries in October 2025 (summary section, "Full-time average earnings October 2025").
How to read this: these are averages across everyone in the industry, junior and senior, and the men's and women's figures reflect different mixes of jobs. They are not a salary offer for any role and not a comparison of pay for the same job. See our salaries and cost of living guide for the wider picture, and try the salary calculator.
