Job summary

The invites applications for the post of Hospital Optometrist, from Optometrists registered with the General Optical Council. Applicants must, by virtue of their citizenship or residence status, be entitled to take up employment in Gibraltar and who are, or upon employment will be resident in Gibraltar.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic candidate to join our small team in delivering the wide range of secondary care optometry services required for our local community. The post holder will need to have experience of managing a varied caseload, including providing support to patients with complex needs. Specialist accreditation is desirable, but training will otherwise be made available once in post.

The GHAs responsibilities include: services through clinics, outpatient services, and hospital care. Managing emergency medical services and accident and emergency (A&E) services. Conducting health campaigns and initiatives aimed at disease prevention and health promotion. Offering mental health care and community-based health services.

Services are mainly provided from St. Bernards Hospital. The hospital also collaborates with international medical institutions for specialised treatment and support.

Job responsibilities

To assist the Head Optometrist in the delivery of a comprehensive Optometric Service, autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team, using advanced specialized and highly specialized clinical skills, experience and evidence-based practice to personally deliver, assess, diagnose and formulate treatment plans for the patients referred to the Optometry Service. Following NICE Guidelines and the standards laid out by the General Optical Council and British College of Optometrists.

To personally deliver a range of specialised optometric care and extended role optometric care,

clinical audit & teaching.

To support the development of, and to help deliver, shared care for ophthalmic conditions, In conjunction with the medical staff.

To keep comprehensive patient notes, statistical records, patient reports or any other administrative requirements of the department.

To liaise with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, to ensure appropriate management of the patient.

To create a suitable environment for a high standard of work.

To assist in the in-service training of other Ophthalmic Staff and professional colleagues.

To be personally responsible for maintaining up to date GOC Registration and ensuring further knowledge of Optometry through Continuous Professional Development.

To assist the Head Optometrist in monitoring working practices in accordance with clinical governance guidelines and proposing changes in policies, to reflect best practice, according to the evolving needs of the service.

To contribute new ideas for the improvement of the service and to be willing to pursue these in consultation with the Head Optometrist.

To collate figures and audit clinical activity as directed by the Head Optometrist.

To report to the Head Optometrist all matters of concern, problems or requirements relating to their area of work. Any Accidents/Near Misses or Health and Safety concerns must be reported immediately.

To abide by all Ophthalmic Department and Optometry Department policies.

To abide by all relevant GHA policies such as those for uniform, confidentiality and data protection, infection control, health and safety, safeguarding, smoking etc.

To undertake any other relevant duties as requested by the Head Optometrist especially during periods of staff absence.

To deputise for the Head Optometrist during periods of absence, as required.

  • Independent prescribing Qualification
  • Post Graduate Specialist Higher Qualification.
  • Experience in Diabetic Retinopathy screening.
  • Experience and/or special interest in Low Vision, Special needs eye care and any specialist service area delivered by the Unit.
  • Knowledge of Multi-Disciplinary team approach to patient care.
  • Personally and professionally responsible with the ability to self motivate.
  • Willingness to undergo relevant training within the Department and in UK.
  • Team player with organizational prioritisation skills.
  • Experience of cycloplegic refractions in children and special needs eye care
  • Well developed written and verbal communication skills with clinical and non clinical colleagues, patients and their relatives, including patients with learning difficulties, poor vision and /or poor hearing, dementia, mental health problems or post stroke.
  • Well developed IT skills.
  • Proficient in applanation tonometry and Indirect fundoscopy via Slit lamp Biomicroscopy.
